Preparations for the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans are in full swing. During the official test day on the 13.626-kilometer Circuit de la Sarthe, teams and drivers gathered crucial insights for the upcoming weekend's race. Simultaneously, several manufacturers made remarkable statements, and the close competition in the Hypercar field promises one of the most exciting races in recent years.
Aston Martin surprises with best time
Aston Martin made headlines on the test day. The Valkyrie set the fastest time of the entire day with a lap time of 3:26.293 minutes. The British hypercar thus relegated Toyota and Cadillac to the following places.
Particularly noteworthy: All eight Hypercar manufacturers were within less than a second of each other. In addition to Aston Martin, Toyota, and Cadillac, Alpine, Ferrari, BMW, Peugeot, and Le Mans newcomer Genesis also showed competitive performances. This suggests an extremely close balance of power, where even small details could decide victory or defeat.
Cadillac held the best time in the morning before Aston Martin improved on it in the afternoon. Toyota was able to complete valuable test kilometers despite an incident in the morning and continues to be among the favorites.
Genesis Ahead of Historic Le Mans Debut
Special attention will be paid to Genesis this year. The Hyundai subsidiary is making its debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the new GMR-001 hypercar.
For Daniel Juncadella, who is now competing in the top class for the first time after two appearances in the GT category, a long-held dream is coming true. The Spaniard already knows the track from his previous Le Mans starts and describes the first section of the track, with the famous Tertre Rouge corner, as one of the most demanding and fascinating parts of the course.
During the test day, Genesis was already able to show that the new vehicle has potential. One of the two cars made it into the top ten of the overall standings. Nevertheless, the team's priority is to gain experience. The main goal is to ensure reliability over the full race distance and to cover as many kilometers as possible.
Ferrari, Toyota, and Cadillac remain favorites
Despite Aston Martin's strong showing, the established hypercar programs continue to be considered the main contenders for overall victory. Ferrari arrives as one of the benchmarks of the current endurance scene, while Toyota can draw on its immense experience and long track record at Le Mans.
Cadillac also left a strong impression on the test day, being among the fastest cars in both sessions. Alpine also presented itself as competitive and could get involved in the fight for the top spots with a trouble-free race.
Exciting starting situation in LMP2 and LMGT3
In the LMP2 category, IDEC Sport set the fastest time of the test day. The class again promises a close race with numerous potential winners.
In the LMGT3 category, Ferrari dominated the test day. Several Ferrari 296 GT3 Evos were found at the top of the timesheets. However, Porsche, Corvette, BMW, and Ford also proved competitive, so an open battle for the class victory is also expected here.
American Hopes and Young Talents
The American, Eric Powell, is drawing particular attention. The former TC America champion is making his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year and will compete in a Ford Mustang GT3 Evo. After switching to the World Endurance Championship, Powell is experiencing the European motorsport scene for the first time and sees the start at Le Mans as the highlight of his career so far.
Doriane Pin is also among the interesting stories of the race. The Frenchwoman, who works as a development driver for Peugeot, is returning to endurance racing after her time in Formula racing. In the LMP2 class, she wants to recommend herself for higher tasks and ultimately make the leap into a Hypercar cockpit.
Outlook for the race weekend
After the test day, the official practice and qualifying sessions will follow starting Wednesday. Only then will it become clear which teams have consciously kept their cards close to their chest and who actually has the fastest race packages.
However, the test day has already made one thing clear: the hypercar field is more balanced than it has been in a long time. With Aston Martin as a surprise, the established favorites Ferrari, Toyota, and Cadillac, as well as the ambitious newcomers from Genesis, the 2026 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans should offer the best conditions for a high-class endurance race.
