A damaged race car, a last-minute vehicle change and a challenging airfield course: At the Carrera Cup in Diepholz, Olaf Manthey had to prove on August 5, 1990 that even under adverse circumstances one could expect to encounter him. The unusual white Porsche 964 was about valuable points in a season that was set to write motorsport history.

At the premiere of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany in 1990, a new brand trophy revolutionized national motorsport. At the 23rd ADAC Flugplatzrennen in Diepholz, Olaf Manthey impressively proved in the Porsche 964 Cup that despite unforeseen obstacles and a temporary vehicle change, he remained calm and laid the foundation for a historic championship.

As part of the high-profile weekend of the German Touring Car Championship (DTM), the sixth race of the newly created Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland was held on August 5, 1990 at the temporary airfield course in Diepholz. As a successor to the legendary Turbo Cup, Porsche switched to the brand new Porsche Carrera 2 of the 964 generation from this season. Powered by an air-cooled 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, the Cup cars delivered around 265 hp. The strict regulations ensured absolute equality and thrilling head-to-head duels, in which only the driving skills were decisive. Between concrete barriers, rapid changes of direction and packed stands, races took place this weekend in a distinctive atmosphere that only a race track can provide.

For Olaf Manthey's team, however, the middle of the season was more turbulent than planned. As he had been accustomed to, the signal green light for the start of the season was not given until the last day of the season. Kümmerling-Porsche had rented a car for the 24-hour race in Spa and the experienced driver had to make a hasty change to a white replacement car at short notice. The distinctive sponsor design was hastily adapted to the white body of starting number 33. Despite the unfamiliar working environment, Manthey showed no impression on the tight course with its hard concrete kerbs. With precision and his usual fighting spirit, he steered the white Interims Elf through the obstacles, finished 4th overall in the race, and defended important points on the way to the very first championship title in the history of the Carrera Cup.
