The Norisring once again lived up to its reputation as a spectacular street circuit. In front of an impressive backdrop, spectators at the DTM's only street circuit experienced thrilling battles, a serious accident, and a driver who left his mark on the weekend: Nicki Thiim. The Dane won both races, taking the lead in the overall standings at the halfway point of the season.
Thiim already set the standard in Saturday's race. After securing pole position, the Aston Martin driver controlled the proceedings at the front and held his own against strong competition from Mercedes and Ford. However, the race was overshadowed by a serious accident in the closing stages. After losing control, Maximilian Paul collided with Kelvin van der Linde's BMW. Race control red-flagged the race, and rescue services were immediately on site. Paul suffered a fractured lower leg, while van der Linde, according to initial examinations, was not seriously injured. After the interruption, Thiim confidently brought home his first Norisring victory of the weekend.
Even on Sunday, the Dane left no room for doubt about his current form. With another strong performance, he prevailed once again and celebrated his second victory within 24 hours. Finn Wiebelhaus impressed in second place with a strong showing, confirming his positive development, while Lucas Auer collected further important championship points in third. With this one-two finish, Thiim moved to the top of the drivers' standings, giving himself an excellent starting position for the second half of the season.
The Norisring once again showed why it is considered an exception in the DTM calendar. The mere 2.2-kilometer-long track with its long straights and hard braking points led to numerous overtakes and intense duels. At the same time, the street circuit demanded the utmost precision from the drivers, as even the smallest mistakes were immediately punished.
From a German perspective, several drivers were able to collect valuable points, even though the big victory wasn't achieved. The consistency of many teams, in particular, promises an exciting continuation of the season, as the championship has become tighter halfway through.
The race weekend in Nuremberg thus offered everything that characterizes the DTM: top-class touring car sport, spectacular overtakes, dramatic moments, and a driver who is currently in a league of his own. Nicki Thiim travels to the next round of the season as the new overall leader, impressively positioning himself as a favorite for the title fight with his double victory at the traditional Norisring.
