The motorsport world has lost one of its most inspiring personalities: Alessandro „Alex“ Zanardi has died at the age of 59. The Italian succumbed to the consequences of a severe handbike accident in 2020, from which he was never able to fully recover.

Zanardi was far more than a successful race car driver. For many people, he became a symbol of unwavering will to live. Setbacks that would have broken others, he transformed into new motivation – always accompanied by optimism and remarkable inner strength.

His career began in international motorsport, where he competed in Formula 1, among other series. However, he celebrated his greatest sporting successes in the USA: in 1997 and 1998 he won the Champ Car championship, becoming one of the most influential drivers of his time.

A dramatic turning point followed on September 15, 2001, at the race on the Lausitzring. Zanardi lost both legs in a serious accident. That he survived this crash at all was a miracle. But what followed made him an exceptional figure: with impressive determination, he fought his way back – not only to life but also into motorsport.

With specially modified vehicles, he returned to the racing circuit and celebrated success in touring car racing, including in the World Touring Car Championship. At the same time, a new chapter in his athletic career began: In handcycling, Zanardi developed into one of the most successful athletes at the Paralympic Games. In 2012 and 2016, he won several gold medals, once again making sports history.

Yet even these successes only told part of his story. Zanardi impressed most with his attitude towards life. He met challenges with a smile and inspired people far beyond the world of sports.

In 2020, another severe stroke of fate befell him: during a charity race in Tuscany, he collided with a truck and suffered very serious head injuries. Long months in the hospital and several operations followed. Now Zanardi has died peacefully surrounded by his family.

The reactions from sports and society show the impression he has left. Colleagues, teams, and organizations honor him as an exceptional person and a great fighter. His legacy extends far beyond titles and victories.

With Alessandro Zanardi, the world loses not only an outstanding athlete, but above all a person who, like few others, has shown what it means to never give up.
