In its early days, Porsche was confined to the smaller classes, only aiming for major overall victories in the late sixties when it dominated the competition with the Porsche 917, and in the seventies, it won major classics like Le Mans, Sebring, and Daytona. In the eighties, Porsche was a guarantee of victories and championships with the introduction of the 956\/962 to the race tracks, winning almost everything there was to win for a decade. After that, however, partly due to regulations, Porsche was primarily found again in GT sport and the smaller classes, after the costly Group C era ended. The 911 was also brought to an overall Le Mans victory as a GT1 version, but at some point, the <a href=\"https:\/\/curbs-magazin.com\/scene\/fia-htps-wie-sie-sein-sollten-porsche-911\/\">Porsche 911 GT1<\/a> getting on in years and the GT1 days were numbered. A V-8 3.4-liter engine with 750 hp, a carbon fiber monocoque, and plenty of downforce, along with satisfied faces at the first roll-out, which went promisingly. But just one day after the first two-day test drives in Weissach, the unthinkable happened: Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking and Development Director Horst Marchart stood before the entire assembled motorsport department to announce the cancellation of the LMP1 project... A contender that the public never got to see back then. In essence, they ceded the field at Le Mans to Audi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Turning Point<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in 2005, Porsche returned to sports car racing with a new project. Surprisingly, Porsche came back with a Porsche RS Spyder LMP2 car. However, they didn't want to hide behind the overall winner Audi but deliberately chose the LMP2 class for their return, as internal calculations showed that with the lighter LMP2 car, they had enough performance to regularly beat the \u00abbig\u00bb LMP1 cars. Additionally, they wanted to build a more cost-effective version than an LMP1 car, which they could also sell to customers. Although Porsche, internally designated the \u00ab9R6,\u00bb initially wasn't a consistent winner in terms of overall victories, it was the car to beat in the LMP2 class and became attractive to customer teams. Purchase price back then: 1.2 million euros. And on tighter tracks, they could achieve one or two coveted overall victories and snatch a significant win from the LMP1 representatives here and there. Because with its 775 kilograms, the LMP2 Porsche was more agile and maneuverable on tighter tracks, being almost 150 kilograms lighter than the LMP1 competition. Its 3.4-liter V8 naturally aspirated engine (Type MR6) had enough power with 500 hp to beat the \u00abbig\u00bb ones. At the last race in Laguna Seca in 2005 for the ALMS (American Le Mans Series), Porsche started the Porsche RS Spyder in the USA for the first time and immediately showed its potential with a class victory. But Porsche wasn't satisfied with that. Team Penske achieved the sensation when they secured a one-two finish against the stronger LMP1 competition in the American Le Mans Series in Mid Ohio in 2006. Until then, it was a novelty in the history of the ALMS, as there had never been a one-two finish for the smaller class against the LMP1 cars. In 2007, the Penske Porsche RS Spyders even managed eight overall victories in the ALMS. The load-bearing engine and gearbox unit was flanged to the \u00abCarbon\u00bb chassis and serves as the load-bearing unit for the double wishbones at the rear. The dampers with torsion bars were actuated via \u00abpushrods\u00bb at the front and rear. The dampers were arranged transversely at the front on the monocoque above the servo-assisted rack and pinion steering. At the rear, three dampers were at work: one mono-damper arranged transversely on the gearbox and two laterally positioned dampers next to the gearbox. Grip was transferred to the road by the 18-inch Michelin tires in sizes 29\/65\/18 at the front and 31\/71\/18 at the rear. The AP braking system, consisting of carbon brake discs and six-piston aluminum brake calipers, provided the deceleration. The carbon-fiber body, developed with extensive wind tunnel work, provided ample downforce with sophisticated airflow management for high downforce and thermal supply for the radiators and engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Porsche RS Spyder #707<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Porsche RS Spyder that we drove at the \u00abCurbs Trackday\u00bb was driven by <a href=\"https:\/\/curbs-magazin.com\/heads\/fredy-lienhard-schneller-gentleman\/\">Fredy Lienhard<\/a> Competed in the 2008 European Le Mans Series. Lienhard\u2019s first race was the 12 Hours of Sebring. In the debut of Fredy Lienhard\u2019s RS Spyder, fielded by Horag Racing, the team of Fredy Lienhard, Didier Theys, and Jan Lammers finished fifth in the LMP2 class at the Sebring classic. Horag Racing then entered the LMP2 in Europe. Fredy Lienhard competed in his final season in 2008 with the Porsche RS Spyder #707 and successfully bid farewell to the motorsport stage with a second-place finish in the LMP2 class at the \u00abELMS\u00bb race in Silverstone, alongside Didier Theys and Jan Lammers, on his 61st birthday. Fredy Lienhard\u2019s team was frequently seen on the ELMS podium, but luck wasn\u2019t on their side when it came to securing a victory. Despite leading several times, minor setbacks held the team back. For instance, at Monza, Didier Theys drove the #707 into the gravel trap while in the lead. A bit of irony on the side: during the 1,000-km race at Spa-Francorchamps, Jan Lammers was in the lead but had to pit for a \u00absplash and dash\u00bb refueling run shortly before the end of the race and narrowly lost what seemed like a sure victory. However, Fredy Lienhard\u2019s team won the highly coveted \u00abMichelin Energy Endurance Challenge\u00bb title in 2008.
