Accordingly, races for Formula 1 and 3, as well as sports cars, were planned. Apparently, the AvD (Automobile Club of Germany) intended to hold an invitation race for Formula 1 teams outside the World Championship at the Avus to mark Mercedes-Benz's re-entry into Grand Prix racing. At its last autumn meeting, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) had finally adopted the new Formula 1 regulations for racing cars up to 2.5 liters displacement, effective from 1954. It was also no longer a secret that the Mercedes sports department was working energetically on a return to the top tier of motorsport. However, May 27th would be too soon, they said in Stuttgart. The new Mercedes racing car would not be ready for use by then. The AvD had no choice but to postpone the Avus race to the second half of the year. The date of the Berlin Grand Prix – flanked by the final rounds of the German Racing and Production Car Championship – was therefore moved to September 19th.“

Finally, author Kirchner quotes from an AvD press release from August 1954: „After the European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, the elite of Formula 1 cars will do battle once more on German soil this season on September 19th at the International AvD-Avus Race and the Grand Prix of Berlin. In the Formula 1 car race, which covers 504 kilometers (60 laps) and, due to its excellent field, is equivalent to a World Championship race, a number of prominent private drivers will be on the starting grid alongside the works drivers named by foreign factories and Daimler-Benz in the new Silver Arrows.“

In the World Championship races of the 1954 season so far, the new Mercedes Silver Arrow, designated the W 196 R, had proven to be a resounding success. After its sensational Grand Prix debut on July 4, 1954, in Reims at the French Grand Prix with a Mercedes one-two finish by Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling, Fangio also won at the Nürburgring, on the Bremgarten circuit near Bern, and at Monza. The W 196 produced approximately 260 horsepower, and on the Avus especially, there should be no doubt as to who would finish the Formula 1 race as the victor. The streamlined version was used, driven by contracted drivers Juan Manuel Fangio, Karl Kling, and Hans Herrmann. The veteran champion Hermann Lang, the 1937 Avus winner, was designated as the reserve driver.

It was supposed to be the fastest race. Mercedes-Benz team manager Alfred Neubauer had noted in his notebook that the 1954 Indianapolis 500-mile race in the USA on May 31, 1954, had been the fastest post-war race in recent motorsport history up to that point, with an average speed of 210.58 km/h. The winner, Bill Vukovich (Kurtis Kraft), had set this record. Neubauer believed that the Berlin Grand Prix at the AvD-Avus race could be even faster. So who wouldn't want to be the winner of a race in which the world record of the „Indy 500“ could be surpassed? In addition, there were considerable prize money incentives: 10,000 Marks, 7,500 Marks, and 6,000 Marks for the top three finishers. As a result, the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows W 196 had no worthy opponents. They drove their laps at will and settled the first places among themselves in a kind of private feud. It made no difference whether Kling, World Champion Fangio, or Herrmann took the victory. All three drove the fast eight-cylinder racing car from the Untertürkheim plant, which completed the approximately 500-kilometer total distance with the regularity of a clockwork, without pit stops and without tire changes.

Three Silver Arrows Without Competition at the AvD-Avus Race

In the first starting row on this September 19, 1954, were the three silver, streamlined Mercedes-Benz, followed by the rest of the field. Fangio got the best start, followed by Jean Behra in a Gordini, and then Kling and Herrmann, who had gear shifting problems before the start and accelerated poorly. Louis Rosier (Maserati) was the last to pull away but stopped after only a hundred meters in front of the stands because the driveshaft gave out. On the first lap, Fangio drove at an average speed of 192.8 km/h; on the second lap, he already reached 207 km/h. On the third lap, the lead changed: Herrmann was now ahead of Kling and Fangio.

The race gained momentum: with Herrmann in the lead, followed by Kling and Fangio, who – it almost seemed – didn't quite have the hang of the Avus. The Argentine driver had already experienced significant difficulties with the Nordkurve during practice, approaching it too high in the initial laps. Behra in his Gordini bravely held fourth place but dropped out on the 14th lap. He had caused quite a stir before that. The renowned motorsport journalist Ernst Rosemann wrote in his race report at the time: „Only Jean Behra initially provided excitement. He launched a fantastic overture and would have deserved a special bonus from the propaganda fund for his fiery 13 laps. Always in the thick of the three Mercedes drivers, Fangio, Kling, and Herrmann, once even in the lead, even if that was probably intentional. Then the little blue car fell apart.“ It was announced over loudspeakers that Behra had stopped at station 5 with engine trouble. Later, the Frenchman reported that „the engine of his Gordini had apparently disassembled itself into all its parts.“ Thus, the three W 196s were the only serious contenders in the race – for the other cars, only a supporting role remained. Consequently, the race became rather monotonous lap after lap, even though the three Mercedes drivers constantly changed positions: Fangio, Kling, and Herrmann – each, having led at some point, multiple times, would dive from the Nordkehre, down the straight past the grandstands towards the Südkurve. Indy record pulverized.
In the 52nd lap, Fangio drove at an average of 224 km/h, the fastest lap of the day. As the leaders entered the final lap, Helmut Niedermayr in a Klenk-Veritas entered the north corner at slow speed and stopped at the pit – he was still ranked seventh, ahead of Fred Wacker and behind Harry Schell. The battle raged until the last hundred meters, as Kling veered into the retaining wall, with Fangio trying once more to catch him there. But it was too late for the Argentinian: Kling took first place with a 500 1600 cc. This was followed two minutes later by a dozen production sports cars up to 1300 cc – exclusively Porsches. Helm Glöckler led the field, completing the starting lap at 151.6 km/h and improving to 163.3 km/h in the next pass. However, in the third lap, his car showed heavy smoke, he slowed down considerably, and had to let Helmut Polensky pass him. Polensky won the 1600cc class after 15 laps with a total time of 47:45.2 minutes (156.5 km/h). Ernst Lautenschlager, Arthur Heuberger, and Richard von Frankenberg took the next places. However, Polensky's victory was not enough to win the German Championship; the title was secured by „Axel Linther“ from Cologne, who was registered under a pseudonym. After the race, it became known that this driver was Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips from Horrem, who lived with his parents at Hemmersbach Castle, 20 kilometers northwest of Cologne. Trips began his motorsport career in 1950 on motorcycles and competed in reliability trials, off-road, and orienteering events until 1953.

The start of series sports cars, all Porsche 356

On the Road to Victory: Karl Kling

The competition only saw the tail of the W196.

In the up to 1300 cc class, the winner, Victor Rolff, achieved an overall average speed of 154.1 km/h. Richard von Frankenberg immediately took the lead, followed by Hans Herrmann (both on Porsche 550 Spyders). For the first time, the Borgward vehicles of Karl Günther Bechem and Adolf Brudes were equipped with fuel injection. Brudes was overtaken by leader von Frankenberg in the 15th lap but still secured sixth place in the end. The finish order was ultimately von Frankenberg, ahead of Herrmann and Bechem.

Karl Kling

Karl Kling was born in Giessen on September 16, 1910. Even before World War II, he was active in occasional appearances for Daimler-Benz in touring car events. Immediately after the war, he was successful with Veritas and became German Sports Car Champion three times in a row after 1948. In 1950, he achieved his first victory in a Mercedes. Kling achieved further great successes with the 300 SL racing car in 1952. The collision with a vulture during the Carrera Panamericana in Mexico in 1952, which almost cost him and his injured co-driver Hans Klenk the victory, is unforgettable.
Upon Daimler-Benz AG's return to Grand Prix racing in 1954, Kling was part of the successful team alongside Juan Manuel Fangio, Hermann Lang, and Hans Herrmann. The driver, described by Alfred Neubauer as a „gentleman at the wheel,“ secured numerous outstanding results for the Mercedes team. For instance, in Mercedes-Benz's very first Formula 1 race, the 1954 French Grand Prix, he achieved a second-place finish behind Fangio.
Since 1956, as Neubauer's successor as head of the motorsports department, he only had sporadic appearances, such as winning the 1959 Algiers-Cape Town Rally or his victory in the 1961 Algiers-Lagos-Algiers Rally in a 220 SE. After his retirement in 1968, Karl Kling remained a consultant to the Mercedes-Benz motorsports department for many years. The racing legend died on March 18, 2003, at the age of 92 in Hemmenhofen on Lake Constance.

The start of series sports cars, all Porsche 356

Juan Manuel Fangio

Juan Manuel Fangio, Born on June 24, 1911, in Balcarce, Argentina. He was one of the most outstanding driver personalities in the long history of motorsport.

Hans Herrmann

Hans Herrmann was born on February 23, 1928, in Stuttgart. He was one of the successful racing drivers with whom Daimler-Benz AG returned to Grand Prix motorsport in the 1950s.
His career began in 1952 with the Hessische Winterfahrt. In the same year, he received the Gold Medal for winning his class at the Deutschlandfahrt. From 1954 onwards, he utilized his talent as a works driver for Mercedes-Benz's new Formula 1 team. At the French Grand Prix, his first Formula 1 race, Herrmann set a lap record. He made it to the podium at the Swiss Grand Prix and the AvD-Avus-Rennen.
In 1955, the Stuttgart native was involved in an accident at the Monaco Grand Prix. When he was released from the hospital, his contract was terminated. Mercedes-Benz had since withdrawn from motorsport. In the following years, Hans Herrmann primarily competed with Porsche and ended his career in 1970 with a victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Photos: Daimler AG, Private

„1954 erlebte ich als Siebenjähriger mein erstes Formel-1-Rennen, das AvD-Avus-Rennen mit den legendären Mercedes-Silberpfeilen.
