On September 4, 1988, the World Sportscar Championship stopped at the N\u00fcrburgring. The \u201eJournal ADAC 1000 km Der N\u00fcrburgring\u201c formed the eighth round of the FIA World Sports-Prototype Championship and brought the international Group C field to the 4.542-kilometer Grand Prix circuit in the Eifel. Alongside the dominant Jaguar, Porsche, and Sauber-Mercedes teams, car number 24\u2014a Lancia LC2\/88 entered by the Italian Dollop Racing team\u2014also took to the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Lancia LC2\/88 shown here was chassis #0003B and was driven by Jean-Pierre Frey and Paolo Giangrossi. The mid-engine prototype competed in Class C1 and was powered by a Ferrari 308C engine. The 3.05-liter, 90-degree V8 featured four-valve technology and two KKK turbochargers. Power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a racing transmission. Painted white and red, the Lancia was fitted with Dunlop tires and bore the sponsors Tau RING, East, and Dollop during the N\u00fcrburgring race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In qualifying, the qualified drivers Frey and Giangrossi put the Lancia in 19th position on the starting grid with a time of 1:35.910 minutes. In the race, the team was initially able to complete 99 laps before their effort had to be ended prematurely. A fire ultimately forced Dollop Racing to retire. The Lancia was thus classified as one of numerous DNFs in the demanding 1000-kilometer race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
