With Herbert Schnitzer, international motorsport loses a defining personality. The long-time team boss and co-founder of Schnitzer Motorsport has passed away at the age of 85.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Together with his brothers, Herbert Schnitzer laid the foundation for one of the most successful touring car racing teams in history. After the family business became a BMW contract dealer in the mid-1960s, the Schnitzer Motorsport racing team was founded in 1967. After the early death of his brother Josef, Herbert Schnitzer continued the life's work together with Karl Lamm and Dieter Lamm and developed the team into a fixture in international motorsport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over decades, Schnitzer Motorsport amassed successes on the most important race tracks in the world. These include, among others, titles in the Formula 2 European Championship, the European Touring Car Championship, and the World Touring Car Championship, as well as numerous national championships. In addition, there were several overall victories at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and the 24 Hours N\u00fcrburgring. The team set a special milestone in 1999 with the overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even in the modern era, Schnitzer Motorsport remained successful. In 2012, the team won the DTM title with Bruno Spengler. Augusto Farfus's victory in the FIA GT World Cup in Macau in 2018 marked the last major triumph before the long-standing collaboration with BMW ended in 2020, bringing to a close Schnitzer Motorsport's history as a works team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Herbert Schnitzer remained closely involved in motorsport even after his retirement and followed developments with great interest until his final years. Through his work, he shaped generations of drivers, engineers, and team members, leaving behind an exceptional legacy in touring car racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
