Wednesday at the 24 Hours of Le Mans already offered plenty of talking points before the actual race start. While Alpine impressed in the Hypercar class with the fastest qualifying lap, a subsequent disqualification brought disappointment for Corvette in the LMGT3 category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the first free practice session, Cadillac initially set the pace. Earl Bamber set the fastest lap in the Cadillac V-Series.R, leading a strong performance by the US manufacturer, which placed three cars in the top five. A BMW M Hybrid V8 and an Alpine A424 slotted in between. In the LMGT3 class, Lexus initially set the pace, while the Duqueine team marked the best time in the LMP2 category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the evening, qualification then moved into focus. Alpine achieved a remarkable success there: Ferdinand Habsburg in the Alpine A424 set the fastest lap of the day, leaving two Cadillacs in second and third place. BMW, Toyota, Aston Martin, and the new Genesis program also secured their spots in the Hyperpole, with the latter impressing on its Le Mans debut with both vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In contrast, qualification was disappointing for some prominent teams. The two Peugeot 9X8s, as well as the Ferrari 499P of last year's winner AF Corse, failed to make it into the hyperpole. This puts these cars in a difficult starting position even before the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first decisions were also made in the LMP2 class. The Duqueine team secured the fastest time in qualifying, giving them a good starting position for the hyperpole sessions that follow on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the LMGT3 category caused the biggest stir of the day. Peter Dempsey had initially set the fastest qualifying time in the Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R from Racing Team Turkey by TF Sport. However, a few hours later, the vehicle was disqualified. During the technical post-inspection, the stewards found a violation concerning the rear diffuser. The consequence: the vehicle will start the race from the back of the LMGT3 field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With that, Corvette not only lost the fastest lap in its class but also the chance to participate in the Hyperpole sessions with this vehicle. Since the remaining Corvette crews also missed the jump to the fastest participants, no Corvette team will compete for pole position in the GT class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the second free practice session under floodlights, Toyota showed a strong reaction. Kamui Kobayashi set the fastest time of the session in the Toyota GR010 Hybrid, topping the timesheets ahead of Yifei Ye's Ferrari. However, the night session was not without incidents: several cars struggled with spins, tire damage, or minor technical problems. Cadillac, BMW, and Alpine also confirmed their competitiveness once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the crucial hyperpole sessions on Thursday looming, much points to a close fight at the top of the Hypercar class. Alpine, Cadillac, Toyota, BMW, and Ferrari are all within a few tenths of a second of each other. At the same time, Wednesday showed that in Le Mans, speed isn't the only thing that matters: technical reliability and adherence to the rules can already have a decisive impact on the outcome before the race even begins.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
